The LG 42LH3000, a forty-two inch LCD flat panel screen from LG, has a couple of noteworthy features to review, including quality sound design and unique energy saving features. The LH3000’s HD ready (as defined by European specifications) screen resolution stands at 1920 x 1080p and has Freeview connectivity.
The LG 42LH3000’s image quality is on par with most other comparable models. Although most product reviews on the web are fairly positive on picture quality, the LH3000’s dynamic contrast ratio and frame processing rate are only average. The LH3000, however, does possess additional functionality to enhance its existing picture signal. A control guide program allows the viewer to modify the picture quality to enhance the viewing experience.
The most unique aspect of the LG 42LH3000 is perhaps its speaker system. The strategic placement of the speakers inside the front bezel increases the sweet spot by producing a fuller and larger sound bubble. This uniquely uniform speaker placement, referred to as the ‘Invisible Speaker System’ in the LG marketing specifications, has been finely tuned by Mark Levinson.
For the audiophile who desires a more hands on approach to their listening pleasure can select from one of five speaker settings: Cinema, Music, Standard, Game, and Sport. Another sound feature in the LG 42LH3000 is the ‘Clear Voice 2′ enhancement. Clear Voice technology is designed to enhance voices while simultaneously reducing surrounding noise thereby allowing movie dialogue to be crisp and clear. This is especially important when movies have a lot of background clatter. The LH3000 panel contains audio input ports of 20W for installing surround sound components.
The 42LH3000 panel sports a couple of Scart sockets for connecting to components other than high definition, such as DVD players. For high definition connections, there are three HDMI ports. The LCD also possesses a PC interface for computers.
The other unique feature in the LG 42LH3000 is its energy saving technology. The model’s specifications describe three specific aspects that are standouts. For the multi-tasking viewer, there is a standby mode which utilises zero electricity. For music listening, there is a screen off function which sustains speaker sound. The third feature is an Intelligent Sensor which accounts for background light in order to determine the level of brightness to emit from the LCD screen. These features combine to make the LH3000 one of the most energy efficient LCD flat screens in the market.
This LCD is not without its deficiencies. Among the most apparent, is the absence of a PIP, picture-in-picture, option. Another option not available is a Freesat tuner, however, the LG 42LH3000 does offer Freeview which allows the LCD to capture land based digital broadcasts.
Our review conclusion is that the LG 42LH3000 is a fairly accommodating LCD flat screen TV. The flat panel weighs slightly in excess of 17 kilograms with a swivel stand and allows for 178 degree viewing angle. Depending on the source, the cost for a new one ranges from slightly under 500 British pounds up to 700 British pounds.
